Although natural gas is a fossil fuel, using a gas turbine or gas engine to generate power produces less emissions than a coal fired plant. Gas turbine and gas engine power stations are common in providing peak power. They can also be used as a supplement to renewable generators, supporting wind and solar.
Similar to CHP, but steam is used to drive a steam turbine which generates additional power. A CCGT station can be up to 60% fuel efficient and provides a cost effective solution as base load or intermediate generator.
There are many businesses in remote parts of the world that require power to sustain themselves. Remote power installations can take the form of renewable technologies, or standard diesel or gas installations. No matter how isolated the site, it isn’t a matter of ‘if’ power can be made available, but ‘how’. Due to their nature, remote power installations must inherently be efficient to be viable.
Coal is one of the highest polluting energy sources, but the reality is that coal is still widely used to generate power today. At eligma we take a realistic view that although the world is striving for a greener future, we need to look after our coal assets so that they are operating at their highest efficiency. Like a well maintained car, a coal fired power station can be less damaging to the environment.
These fuels are often wasted at landfill sites, farms and coal mines. Methane has a much higher greenhouse effect than CO2 and although some sites burn it using a flare, it is a large waste of useful energy. It is possible to install generators to capture the methane gas from such sites and generate electricity.
